Husson lands Central Aroostook’s McClung
BANGOR — Central Aroostook’s Mike McClung will be suiting up for Husson next basketball season after the university announced his intentions to play for the Eagles.
“We are excited to have Mike join our program”, said Husson head coach Warren Caruso. “He had an excellent high school career and is one of the top seniors in the state. Mike’s skill set is a perfect fit for our program and we look forward to building our future around him.”
HUSSON BOUND — Central Aroostook High School’s Mike McClung has selected Husson University to continue his basketball career. McClung, shown here in a tournament game earlier this year, averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds a game this year.
“I really like the school and the academics,” said McClung, who plans to study criminal justice at Husson, “but what really drew me there was coach Caruso.”
McClung, who served as a captain for the Central Aroostook squad this season, averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks per game his senior year. He was named a Maine McDonald’s All Star in 2012, playing in the State All-Star Game at his future home court earlier this month.
McClung was also named to the All-Aroostook County All-Star Team, competing in that game this off-season as well, his second year in a row to be honored in the county. He was also named to the All-Tournament First-Team for his performance in the playoffs by the Bangor Daily News.
As a junior, McClung was a member of the 2011 undefeated Class D State Championship team that finished the season a perfect 22-0. For his efforts, he was awarded the William Warner Award as the MVP of the Class D State Tournament, and was named First-Team All-Tournament by the BDN.
At Central Aroostook, McClung was a starter on the varsity basketball team for his last three seasons, and was also a standout in baseball and soccer, starting regularly since his sophomore season on the pitch, diamond and court. He served as a three-sport captain for the Panthers his senior year.
McClung will join a Husson team that graduates just two seniors from their 2011-12 squad, which finished the year at 15-13, earning a trip to the ECAC Division III New England Championships. After a difficult start to the season, the Eagles rebounded, winning 13 of their last 16 regular season games. Husson reached the North Atlantic Conference semifinal game before finishing their season on a two-game slide. The Eagles completed their 41st consecutive winning season in 2011-12, and look to move back to the top of the North Atlantic Conference after winning NAC titles in 2008-09 and 2010-11.
