WASHBURN — Washburn District High School has handed out its winter sports awards during a ceremony at the school late last month and they had plenty to celebrate — a repeat championship for the girls’ basketball team and two varsity boys basketball players topping the 1,000-point mark.
JV boys basketball coach Mike Hartford presented certificates to Justin Farley, Andrew McLaughlin, Michael Forand, Devon Thompson, Anthony Singletary, Chandler Dobson, Mac Hartford, Cameron Bragg, Cameron Preston, Michael Ericson, Alex Pellitier, Kenny Irving and manager Kennedy Churchill. Irving received the Rookie of the Year award, Pellitier was most improved and Dobson received the coaches’ award.
JV girls basketball coach Tammy Tatlock passed out certificates to Lucia Bragg, Stacy Landry, Hannah Heald, Catelyn Coulombe, Tyra Shaw and Taylor Blackstone-Thompson. The coaches’ award was presented to Heald. Shaw was selected as best defensive player and Coulombe as best offensive player.
Earning letters for cheerleaders were Tiffany Bragg, Alexa Woodman, Mykala Espling and Kaylee Doody. Coaches Heather Bragg and Roxxi Smith also presented pins to Marianne Helton, Mariena Bragg, Breanna Hyde, Nikki Richardson, Michaela Bragg, Tia Dee, Courtney Cannon, Caitlyn Roix, Shanae Burtt and Mikayla Churchill. The spirit award was given to Cannon, most improved to T. Bragg and the coaches’ award to Mi. Bragg and Hyde, who also received a school fleece, as did Dee.
Coach Randy Norsworthy passed out the boys’ varsity awards. Jordan McLaughlin and Mitch Worcester were named Co-MVPs and lauded for topping 1,000 career points. Mason Turner and Chase Chandler were honored with the coaches’ award. Earning either a letter and/or a pin were manager Hartford, Preston, Irving, Ericson, Bragg, Worcester, A. McLaughlin, Farley, Nick Bragg, Turner, J. McLaughlin, Jeremy Hartsgrove, Zach Davis, Chandler and managers Churchill and Owen James.
Coach Mike Carlos presented the varsity girls’ basketball awards. Mackenzie Worcester was named the best offensive player and Carsyn Koch the top defender. The coaches’ awards went to Carmen Bragg and Rayah Saucier. Receiving a letter and/or a pin were Landry, Olivia Doody, manager Marlaina Stewart, Saucier, Rachel Rossignol, Blackstone-Thompson, Koch, C. Bragg, Nicole Olson, Joan Overman, Worcester, Coulombe, Heald, Landry, L. Bragg and manager Bragg.
George Seward Plaques were presented to J. McLaughlin, Mi. Worcester, Ma. Worcester and Koch. The plaque, which goes to the basketball MVPs, is named for a former WDHS athlete and retired school system employee.
