Kelly shines in Maine State Science Fair
Students from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), including one from Presque Isle, distinguished themselves at the Maine State Science Fair, held on Saturday, March 24 at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.
Heather Brown of East Orland, Kathryn Peterson of Auburn, and Judy Yau of Newport won first place in Group A: Biochemistry, Biology, Medicine and Plant Science for their research project “Good Vibrations: The Effect of Movement Has on Plant Development.”
Andrew Whitman of Holden and Ryan Kelly of Presque Isle placed third in Group C: Biochemistry, Biology, Medicine and Plant Science for their research on “The Effect of Sound on Hydroponically Grown Ocimum Basilicum.”
The students undertook these research projects under the supervision of MSSM Chemistry Instructor Deborah McGann.
MSSM’s Executive Director, Luke Shorty, congratulated the students and Mrs. McGann on their accomplishments.
“MSSM is very proud of these five young students,” said Shorty. “It’s thrilling to see their hard work and creativity recognized in this way.”
The State Science Fair has grown rapidly since the Jackson Laboratory started hosting the event in 2010. The competition is open to all high school students in Maine. This year, the lab received 153 applications.
