The next meeting to help organize events for this year’s Mapleton Daze weekend will be Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mapleton Lions Hall.
All interested persons who would like to help are invited to attend. Any non-profit organization or church that would like to have a booth or activity at the Friday night family and friends get-together should contact Darcy McBay to make arrangements. Mapleton Alumni meeting
The annual business meeting of the Mapleton Alumni Association will be held Wednesday, April 18 at the Lion’s Hall at 6:30 p.m. The annual banquet will be discussed, as well as any other business. Trash to Treasure
The Mapleton Ladies Extension will be holding a “Trash to Treasure” sale at the Lion’s Hall Saturday, April 28. If anyone has handmade crafts or used items to sell, tables can be rented for $25. Mapleton Lions Club supper and auction
On Saturday, May 5, the 50th annual Mapleton Lions Club auction will be held at 6 p.m. at the Mapleton Lions Hall. There are hundreds of donated items and services that will be auctioned that evening. This annual event is the major fundraiser for the charities supported by the Lions Club. Some of the club’s charities include Project Graduation, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, Mapleton Boy and Cub Scouts and the Mapleton Recreation Department. Each year the club hangs the Christmas lights along Main Street and the club bears the expense of the electricity used to keep the lights on. They conduct the annual Memorial Remembrance Day Ceremony for our Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill veterans at the Mapleton Elementary School following the club’s annual Memorial Day Parade.
The club also helps individuals with little income to purchase eyeglasses. In the 1920s, Helen Keller asked Lions Club International to become the “Knights for the Blind.” Mapleton Lions continue in this tradition by collecting used eyeglasses that are recycled for Third World countries. Also in 2011, the Club helped three families with a member of each family fighting cancer. Through benefits held at the Mapleton Lions Club hall, over $60,000 was raised for these families. Without the support of our neighbors in Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill, this kind of help would not be possible. Please come and support these Mapleton Lions Club efforts.
The Mapleton Lions Club auction is the first of the club’s two major fund-raising projects for these purposes. In June, the Mapleton Lions Club will host the Lions Club annual chicken barbecue as the kick-off event of Mapleton Daze which the club is sponsoring this year. It also will be the sponsor of the Maple Meadow Farm Festival that will occur as part of Mapleton Daze.
All of these events are made possible by the generous support of our neighbors and businesses in the central Aroostook area. We invite everyone to attend the auction which will follow a public ham and bean supper at the Mapleton Lions Hall. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the auction at 6 p.m. Come to one or both of these events. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
