Mitchell, Mary Katherine, 83, of Caribou and Presque Isle, on April 9, 2012. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on April 14, at the Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, Caribou. A reception will follow services at the funeral home.
CARIBOU and PRESQUE ISLE – Mary Katherine Mitchell, 83, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, April 9, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer, with her family by her side. Mary was born in Caribou on September 26, 1928, she was the youngest daughter of the late Perry and Mary Mitchell. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Meda, at six weeks of age and in 2010 by her oldest sister and best friend, Margaret Brewer.
Mary graduated from Caribou High School in 1947 and had a long retail sales career with the J.C. Penney Co. of Caribou and Presque Isle. She retired in 1993. She was a 78 year member of the Bessie Gray Memorial United Methodist Church of Caribou, where she was active in the Jennie Lyons Circle. In 1961 she joined the Elizabeth Chapter #108 Order of the Eastern Star in Caribou. She held a life membership in Lunar Chapter #126 OES in Presque Isle.
In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling to Japan, Europe, England, Ireland and Alaska. She was an avid card player and especially enjoyed the challenge of a bridge game. She belonged to several bridge groups over the years.
Mary is survived by her sister, Norma Shafer, of Katy, TX; niece, Sandra Brewer May of El Dorado Hills, CA; nephew, Richard Brewer of Richmond, VA; niece, Brenda Brewer of Joliet, IL; and niece, Elizabeth Callahan of Katy, TX.
The family would like to thank Dr. Vatsala Kirtani of TAMC for her compassionate care of Mary. A special thank you goes to the Hospice of Aroostook Team for their end of life support of Mary and her family.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, April 14, 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou, Rev. Tom Bentum officiating. A reception will follow services at the funeral home. There will be a private family committal service at Evergreen Cemetery.
