Officials with the Maine Veterans Home have selected resident Robert Blaisdell as Veteran of the Month at the Caribou residential facility.
Blaisdell was born on Oct. 18, 1928, in Fort Fairfield. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School and worked on the Blaisdell family farms.
Blaisdell joined the Army on Jan. 23, 1951, and served as an infantryman in the Pacific and Korea. He reached the rank of Private 1st Class and was honorably discharged on Oct. 12, 1952. His military decorations include the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.
After returning from Korea, he worked on the Blaisdell Farms for a combined 40 years. He worked there and served as owner. He was also active in the VFW and the American Legion.
Blaisdell and his wife, Yvette, have seven children, 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He and his family enjoyed traveling together all over Maine and parts of Canada. He visited California and Florida and has always found Maine to be his favorite state.
In September of 2008, Blaisdell moved to Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou after residing in Fort Fairfield almost his entire life. At MVH Caribou, he enjoys reading about history, genealogy and sports, especially basketball. He also enjoys watching television and listening to country music. He also has many friends at the Home and he likes to interact with them and can be found sharing stories and funny memories on any given day.
The Veteran of the Month award was made in gratitude for Blaisdell’s military service to his county.
