A ‘city store’ in Houlton — Probably no dry goods store in eastern Maine has grown more rapidly, none more steadily during the past 10 years, than that of G.W. Richards & Co. Everything that is new and up-to-date can be found at Aroostook’s only department store.
On the road — Bert Cameron has accepted a position with the Robinson Grocery Company as traveling salesman.

Hindenburg Disaster — Dr. George Ebbett, son of Dr. and Mrs. P.L.B. Ebbett who is an intern at the Monmouth Memorial Hospital at Long Branch, New Jersey has cause never to forget the disaster which destroyed the dirigible Hindenburg with a loss of 33 lives last Thursday night. The young doctor with Houlton ties was among the first to respond to the horrific scene and undertake first aid for the sufferers.
On the job — The employment of Peter J. Haggerty of Houlton as a state liquor inspector by the Maine Liquor Commission was confirmed by the governor. Mr. Haggerty is a Deputy Sheriff on the staff of Sheriff Jasper Lycette.
Drews Lake — Members of the Sunshine Club — Mrs. John Murphy, Mrs. Laura Hoar, Mrs. Ruth Pipes, Mrs. Mabel Laing and Mrs. Vera Rogerson — completed two friendship quilts.
50 Years Ago-May 10, 1962

Spring storm — Wind gusts reported up to about 50 mph disrupted the business section of Houlton for about an hour and sent the fire department on three calls. Wind apparently knocked down a tree near the Bangor Street substation of the Houlton Water Co., causing the fuse holder to break down.
Queen Jill — Jill Peabody was crowned Houlton High School Circus Queen during the annual festivities.
TV wars — The Houlton Town Council took no action regarding a letter from Presque Isle-based WAGM-TV opposing the attempts by cable television companies to establish local service. In a related matter, Ricker College Radio and TV Director Jerry McCarthy teamed up with WAGM’s Nate Churchill to produce “Northern Notebook,” a local series of interest.
Honored scholar — James Rhoda, a senior at Hodgdon High School, was honored by the Maine Teachers Association for excellent performance on the College Entrance Exam.

Nuclear dump site — Phillip Merletti of Lee, a spokesman for the Maine Citizens Against Nuclear Dumps, advised the Houlton Town Council that the establishment of a dump for low-level radioactive waste in southern Aroostook County was a definite possibility.

UMPI honors — Stephen Savoy of Houlton was named Salutatorian for his graduating class at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. A 1983 HHS graduate, he planned to be a certified public accountant after graduation.
Promoted — Tracy Burlock, a Bowdoin College graduate and the daughter of Walter and Sara Burlock of Houlton, was named vice president, corporate banking at BayBank Boston.
