Horner, Carol E., 59, May 6, 2012. Arrangements by Dunn Funeral Home, Houlton.
NEW LIMERICK – Carol E. Horner, 59, passed away on May 6, 2012. She was the proprietor of Carol’s Country Yarns in Houlton, a business that she started – despite her diagnosis of breast cancer – to fulfill her dream of having a yarn shop in northern Maine. Although complications from the disease eventually proved too much for even her resilient spirit to overcome, Carol enjoyed immensely sharing the joys and camaraderie of knitting, being part of the Houlton community, and living in The County.
Originally from Massachu-setts, Carol was a longtime resident of Wellfleet, where she met her husband Peter Ruskis. It was on Cape Cod where she became an ardent bird watcher, a pastime that she continued in Maine; and last summer, Carol and Peter were delighted by a pair of resident bluebirds in their backyard. She was also an avid reader, found pleasure in her many creative projects, and cared deeply about music.
Carol had a rare gift for connecting with people, for appreciating the simple moments of a day, and for facing the world without illusions and yet with great love.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Ruskis, of New Limerick. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers and their families.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Gifts may be made in Carol’s memory to the Ark Animal Sanctuary, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton, ME 04730. Online condolences and guest book: dunn funeral.com.
