Limestone Art Teacher Jessica Goodwin shows that holes shouldn’t be poked into the tinfoil too close together, or they’ll tear.

Art Teacher Jessica Goodwin shared an easy way to make a tea light holder Mom is sure to love; the light of the candle will shine through carefully-poked holes in tinfoil wrapped around a simple glass jar, revealing a message or design young ones have written specifically for their Mom, like “I love you,” “world’s best Mom,” or a pattern of heart, flowers or anything else Mom likes.

Materials:
• tinfoil,
• a cleaned empty glass jar (any size),
• a cleaned Styrofoam tray (like the ones meat and vegetables come on),
• a toothpick,
• tape or glue (whatever is around the house) and
• a tea light to place inside.

Directions:

The tinfoil will wrap around the face of the glass jar, like a label. Cut a strip of tinfoil that will cover the jar’s flat surface and wrap all the way around the jar.

Putting a few holes into tinfoil with a toothpick can make a beautiful custom tea light holder that will make any Mother’s Day special. Limestone Art Teacher Jessica Goodwin is shown here poking holes in the heart-shaped pattern she traced.

Place the tinfoil on top of the meat tray.

Without putting a hole in the tinfoil, lightly trace a message to mom on the tinfoil with the toothpick. The toothpick will leave behind a light groove in the tinfoil that can use as a hole-poking guide.

Once the pattern has been lightly written, poke holes in the traced lines and make certain the holes are about half of a pencil-eraser’s distance apart from each other.

“Make sure you space the holes out because if the holes are too close together, you’ll end up tearing the tinfoil,” Goodwin cautions.

“The more holes you have, the more light will shine trough,” she added.

After the tinfoil has been decorated, wrap it around the jar’s flat surface. Secure the tinfoil in place using tape or glue — whatever you can find at home.

Put an un-lit tea light candle inside the jar (Mom will light it when she’s ready).

Present the gift to Mom and get ready for a great big hug!
