On Sunday, May 20 canoe and kayak enthusiasts, some seasoned veterans, others rookies, along with well-wishers and weather skeptics, will gather on the shores of the Madawaska River, prepared to brave the 5.3-mile course of the 32nd annual Madawaska River Run. That course will hopefully take them (without incident) from the bridge at Little Madawaska Lake, along the winding path of the river, traveling under the bridge in Stockholm to the finish line.

Sponsored by the Stockholm American Legion Post, this event historically provides participants and those who opt to observe, a Sunday filled with laughter and good-natured paddling competition.

Registration for the annual event begins at 9 a.m., the morning of the race, at the Little Madawaska Lake Bridge. The entry fee for all divisions and categories is $12 per person and includes one T-shirt.

Racers will be assigned a number; with the first being called to begin their trek at 11 a.m. with all other following in timed intervals. As each craft crosses beneath the Stockholm Bridge, their times will be recorded with winners announced once everyone have completed the course and times determined.

The announcement of the annual Madawaska River Race winners will take place at the Stockholm American Legion Post Home where refreshments will be available.

Throughout the registration period and up to the end of the race, American Legion members will be selling raffle tickets on a 10’ WaterQuest kayak. Tickets are $1 each or five for $6. The winning ticket will be drawn during the race awards presentation.
