Shaw advances in state tennis tournament

    CARIBOU — Three Caribou girls and one Presque Isle boy will be moving on in the state high school singles tennis tournament.

    The regional qualifier was held in Caribou on Saturday with competitors from Calais to Madwaska.

    Connor Shaw of Presque Isle was the top seed for the boys and he advanced by beating Caribou’s Michael Marquis in the qualifying round, 6-3, 7-5.

    For the girls, Caribou’s Carly Pinette, Ashley Richards and Katie Keaton won their qualifying matches.

    Pinette, the top seed, defeated Van Buren’s Parisse Rossignol 6-2, 6-1. Richards topped Haley Lizotte of Van Buren, 6-3, 6-3; and Katie Keaton defeated Dani Wolland of Presque Isle, 6-1, 6-2.

    Also qualifying out of Region 1 were Houlton’s Zachariah Harvey and Lucas Anderson, Eric LaPlante of Van Buren and Fort Kent’s Roxy Pelletier.

    Top finishers at the regional qualifying advance to play at Colby College in Waterville, beginning with the state round of 48 slated for Friday, May 25. The semifinals and finals will be played on Monday, May 28.
