WOODLAND — When Woodland School librarian Cindy Privette came back from spring break, she found a surprise waiting for her: a box filled with 45 brand new library books. A week later, she received $200 in the mail for her winning photo; all for placing second in the Reading Is Fundamental “Your Best Shot” photo contest.

Staff and faculty at the Woodland Consolidated School take lots of pictures throughout the year — the school’s hallways are seemingly wallpapered with students’ candid photos and smiling faces.

When Woodland students were receiving their free books from the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program earlier this year, Privette snapped a few photos.

“I always enjoy taking photos of the children receiving their books and use them to make a collage to post in the library; the children enjoy seeing themselves and it’s a good way for parents and the community to see what’s happening in the library,” she said.

When Privette discovered the RIF photo contest, she had scores of photos to pick from.

“I actually entered six different photos,” she explained. “This was a national contest so I really didn’t expect much, but thought we might get a book for the library.”

“ … Imagine my surprise to find a box of 45 books waiting for me when I returned from Spring Break and then a check for $200 arrived a week later!” Privette added.

The second-place winning photo of Amanda Poulin receiving her new book was captioned, “May I have this book? Thank you RIF! I’m going to read it to my mom.”

“These photos exemplify the type of work RIF volunteers are doing every day, providing free books to kids in need and literacy resources that help families foster lifelong readers,” said Carlo H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF.

The books awarded to the Woodland School are from the RIF Multicultural Book Collection, designed for readers in kindergarten through fourth grade.
