BANGOR — This time three years ago, Cody Hand was preparing to graduate from Hodgdon High School, one of 43 members of the class of 2009 located in Aroostook County.
On Saturday, Hand, 20, accepted his associate degree, graduating with a 3.7 GPA. Before the conferral of degrees, Hand was presented with the EMCC Student of the Year Award. He was also one of only two students in the state to receive the George Mitchell Scholarship Award, which will allow him to go to Ireland in the fall.
Hand said “he was the first member of his family determined to live in a larger area.”
Striving for independence, he headed to Bangor with the ambition of becoming a radiology technician (RT). While waiting for acceptance into the RT program at Eastern Maine Community College, he spent his first year away from home meeting his liberal studies requirements.Cody Hand
In college, Hand participated in Student Senate and the Student Leadership Circle. He also was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and served as an academic tutor, test administrator proctor and a senior lab proctor for the medical radiography program.
Hand stated he plans to attend the School of Nuclear Medicine in Lewiston in April 2013 with a goal to earn a bachelor’s degree and manage a medical imaging department.
He is the son of Travis and Roberta Hand of New Limerick.
