    To the Republican voters — A Page One endorsement of the Hon. Ira G. Hersey of Houlton for State Senate included a large portrait photo and lengthy position paper.
    Linneus — The school in the Hatfield district was closed Thursday on account of some of the scholars being exposed to the german measles.
    New band — The band formerly known as Donovan’s Band has been reorganized. Jos. Donovan who has been instructor has resigned and Percy Hall will be the leader in the future. They will be known as the Houlton Cadet Band and are open to engagements that can be handled through their manager A.T. Stewart.

    Helpful facts for visitors — Through the cooperation of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, there will soon be established at The Northland Hotel a tourist information bureau. Hotel manager Alberic Mercier will furnish competent operators for the post to hand out maps and local insight.
    Sets up shop — Albert Robinson of Brownville has come to Monticello as the village barber.
    Vacation coverage — Miss Jean Wilder is substituting in the office of County Attorney George Barnes during the absence of Miss Margaret Barnes, who is on two weeks’ vacation.

    Bye, bye Yellowbird — Officials with Northeast Airlines announced their intention to drop passenger service to Houlton and several other destinations in New England.
    Wedding bells — Miss Joyce Ann Monk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Monk of Linneus, became the bride of Peter James Fitzpatrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fitzpatrick of Houlton, May 26 at St. Mary of the Visitation Church. Mrs. William Fitzpatrick was matron of honor while John Fitzpatrick, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.
    New business — M&M Shell Service opened to the public at the intersection of Main and Military streets, which accounts for the M&M name. The gas station is under the direction of Vaughn Thompson.

    State Champs — Coach Murray Putnam and his Warriors of Southern Aroostook Community High School outlasted North Yarmouth, 3-2, to win the school’s second state baseball championship. Team members included Mike Hartin, Dennis Campbell, Travis Hersey, Lex Lindsay, Stacy Sherman, Scott Perrin, Bert Campbell, Paul Nadeau, Jason Tarr, Shawn Curry, Peter Russell, John Byers, Spencer Bragan, Eric Douglas, Ray Charette, Ben Drew and managers Ann and Dani Forest, Matt Bouchie and Clyde Haire.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-24ROTARY GIFT — Donald Ellis, right, treasurer of the Houlton Rotary Club, presents a check of $1,000 to Jared Fitzpatrick and Barbara Nagle to help with their expenses on a youth exchange trip to Russia this summer. The donation was made in memory of Samantha Smith, a former Hodgdon Elementary School student who gained international fame in 1982 when she wrote to Soviet leaders to ask for world peace. Smith’s life was cut short in a 1985 plane crash. The two Houlton students will spend three weeks in Russia as part of the People to People American-Soviet Youth Exchange.

    Special honor — Mrs. Ruth Titcomb, the only surviving charter member of the Lydia Putnam chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was the guest of honor at a special ceremony. Among those attending the event were Mrs. Titcomb’s twin granddaughters, Ellen Askren and Susan Beasley, and Mrs. Robert Butler, representing the DAR.
    New signs — Littleton residents have erected new signs, north- and southbound on U.S. Route 1, painted in red and white colors and featuring the historic covered bridge. The artist is Reggie Corey and man responsible is Cedric Shaw. The covered bridge, one of very few left in Maine, is located in Littleton on the Framingham Road.
