’Cats, Beavers eliminated from playoffs
After being shutout in both regular season meetings, the Presque Isle Wildcats put four runs on the board in the first inning in last Tuesday’s Class B softball preliminary playoff game against the Caribou Vikings.
However, the host Vikes responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to a 17-5 victory. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning after Caribou had scored seven times to enforce the 12-run rule.
The No. 4-ranked Caribou squad moved on to play Old Town in the quarterfinal round Thursday. The Vikes lost that game, 1-0.
Presque Isle, the 13th seed, saw its season come to an end with a 7-10 record.
Courtney Colligan had a double, two singles and scored a run while driving in another for the Wildcats. Carli Bell contributed a pair of singles.
Kristin Plante and Jamie Martin collected four hits apiece to lead Caribou’s offense.
The Washburn Beavers also saw their season come to an end last Tuesday when they were beaten by the Woodland Dragons in an Eastern Maine Class D baseball preliminary playoff game by a score of 8-1.
Washburn was limited to three hits by three Dragon pitchers. Nick Bragg, Cameron Bragg and Andrew McLaughlin all had singles for the Beavers, the No. 11 seed who ended with a 6-8-1 record.
Damon Lincoln had three singles and two RBI for the Dragons, the sixth-ranked team in the division. Woodland went on to lose to Southern Aroostook in Thursday’s quarterfinal round.
Nick Bragg went all seven innings on the mound for Washburn.
