Volleyball tourney proceeds
benefit Maine Veterans’ Home
PRESQUE ISLE — Student Senate members of the Northern Maine Community College hosted their annual “Support Maine Veterans” Volleyball Tournament in April to raise money for the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou. This year’s competition raised over $ 1,200 for the cause.
REPRESENTATIVES of the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou were recently presented with a check for $1,255 from members of Northern Maine Community College’s Student Senate. 
The check reflects the funds raised for the veterans through a community volleyball tournament the student group hosted in April. Taking part in the check presentation were, from left: Timothy Crowley, NMCC president; Dennis Albert, Student Senate adviser; Denis Madore, DAV Smart/Ricker Chapter 10 commander; Melissa Graham, administrator at Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou; Roxann Griffeth-Alley, Senate president; Gail Phair-Kirk, admissions and marketing coordinator at the veterans’ home; and Student Senate members LeAnne Kimball, Tia Crouse and Gene Martin.
“On behalf of Maine veterans we are truly grateful to the students, faculty, and staff at NMCC for all their support. In my position I see veterans in need of assistance on a daily basis,” said Denis Madore, commander of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 10 in Presque Isle.
“It is a wonderful feeling to see an educational institution such as NMCC helping veterans through the entire spectrum,” Madore added. “Starting from the educational level all the way to a time when a veteran finds themselves in need of nursing home care.”
According to Dennis Albert, faculty adviser for the NMCC Student Senate and coordinator of the volleyball tournament, the event is a positive activity for the college as well as Maine Veterans’ Home.
“This is a chance for our students, as well as folks from off campus, to have fun while being physically active and raising money for a worthy cause,” Albert said. “Students who take part can feel a sense of accomplishment at having made a difference in the lives of our local veterans.”
Events like the NMCC Veterans Volleyball Tournament assist the Maine Veterans’ Home with their mission of “Caring for Those who Served.” The donation made from this year’s tournament will benefit the veterans’ home activity fund. The funds from past tournaments have been used to help purchase birthday and Christmas gifts, to help pay for community activities such as attendance at events at the Caribou Performing Arts Center, and even to purchase personal needs items for veterans with financial need.
