American Flag ColorPT Hartley Bither   FLORIDA & LINNEUS – Hartley A. Bither, 92, died June 20, 2012 at St. Andrews Estates North, Boca Raton, Florida. One of ten brothers and sisters, he grew up in Linneus near where I-95 ends at the Canadian Border. He graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and Colby College in Waterville.
From 1942 thru 1945, Hartley was in the Army Air Corps serving with the 27th Squadron and 30th Bomb Group in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he went to work with the Birds Eye Division of General Foods Corporation, first in Maine and then the eastern region office in Rochester, NY. There he met his wife, Virginia Woodhams, who went to work for General Foods on V-J Day. They were married in 1951. A short time later they moved to White Plains, NY where both continued to work for General Foods. It was headquartered in New York City, NY at that time but moved to White Plains, NY in Westchester County in 1954. Hartley’s work progressed from plant operations to sales to product management and marketing. Although they retired at the end of 1982 and moved to Palm Beach County, Florida, Hartley continued to work for another ten years as a traveling in-house consultant for the corporation. For three years, from 1996 thru 1998, Hartley supervised food concessions at the local spring training baseball stadiums, first at West Palm Beach, then Roger Dean in Jupiter. This was an unpaid labor of love as a fundraiser for Amara Temple of the Shriners. The Bithers were active in volunteer work for years at their church, the Royal Poiniana Chapel in Palm Beach. Hartley was a willing volunteer from the time they moved to Arts Retirement Community in 1999.
Hartley is survived by his wife Virgina; his sister, Mildred McIntosh; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
