• N.D. Currier, who carries a daily mail to New Sweden and Jemtland, will convey passengers to Madawaska Lake for $1 each.

Miss LaDene Everett, Miss Caribou of 1962, received a hero’s sendoff from Caribou area businesses prior to the annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival.

• Joseph E. Hall of Washington, D.C. is expected to arrive in Caribou during the month of August to make arrangements for fixing his legal and permanent residence here. He will be accompanied by his wife. His son is visiting relatives here now.

• Viora Whittier has just received a very fine three-fourths size violin, as a gift from her brother in California. She is taking lessons and progressing finely.

100 Years Ago-July 18, 1912

New Sweden helps out PI hospital — In a letter to the editor, Chas. E. Hussey, secretary of the Presque Isle General Hospital, thanked Dr. V.E. Lagerson of New Sweden and the entire Swedish community for their “courtesy, kindness and material assistance extended at the time of the recent excursion. May we work together in the future for the welfare of this institution which is intended not merely for the people of Presque Isle, but for the people of Aroostook County.”

New water system in Limestone — The people of Limestone are talking water, with a car of cement, two cars of pipe, and a thousand pounds of macaroni and the expectation that fifty Italians will arrive, ought to make a growing town like this talk. A building is being hurried to completion for the workmen, the Water and Sewer Co. expect to close a contract with a company to lay the main pipes, but should there be a failure with this firm, there is another standing ready to begin at once; with these evidences Limestone is assured of water.

Perham wedding — A pretty home wedding was conducted at the residence of Victor Helstrom. The contracting parties were Horace L. Tarr of Oakfield and Miss Ellen Helstrom. The ceremony was performed by Rev. S.M. Thompson. The couple took a train to their new home in South Oakfield.

75 Years Ago-July 22, 1937

Responsible for roads — Jasper L. Henderson of Caribou has been appointed by the Maine Highway Commission as general highway supervisor for Aroostook County. He served most recently as highway supervisor for the Caribou district.

Wins $75 — Sidney Tibbetts of Caribou received word by telegram that he had won second prize for the State of Maine in the Fisher Body Craftsman Guild. Tibbetts’ efforts in the design, painting and construction to scale of a modern designed automobile model.

Ordained — Rev. Mallard Nelson of Massachusetts has taken the pastorate of the New Sweden and Stockholm Lutheran churches.

50 Years Ago-July 19, 1962

Donation for hospital — Mae Plourde, representing the Caribou Hairdressers Association, presented a new sink and chair to the Cary Memorial Hospital for use by patients at the facility. Accepting the gift on behalf of the hospital was Miss MacNamara of the Cary Auxiliary.

New ball diamond — Plans were announced to build a new ball field at the Hilltop School which will host high school baseball games, according to Superintendent Richard F. Crocker, Jr.

Best of luck — A full-page advertisement gave Miss Caribou LaDene Everett a proper sendoff to compete against other Aroostook County queens in the Maine Potato Blossom Festival pageant.

Stockholm personals — Gilbert Peterson, who mans the fire lookout tower at Escourt Station, spent a weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Llewellyn Forbes.

25 Years Ago-July 22, 1987

Changing of the guard — Carroll Goodwin, outgoing president of the Caribou Rotary Club, handed over the president’s gavel to Mike Fitzgerald, incoming president of the service club.

Longtime employee — Henry J. Ouellette, Caribou generating plant supervisor for Maine Public Service Company, retired this month after nearly 39 years with the utility. A World War II veteran, his first job with MPS in 1948 was operator at the Caribou diesel plant.
