100 Years Ago-July 25, 1912
Railroad meeting — The railroad commissioners met at the Vaughan House this week relative to matters pertaining to the new electric road. After hearing petitions, they adjourned and were taken by automobile to the Deadwater. It was not thought that any objection to the road would be made.
Can you hear me now? — Hot weather brings trouble to telephone operators as well as to subscribers, and one is that the heat makes it necessary to keep the windows of the exchange open and the noise from the streets makes it difficult to hear the caller clearly. So if you are asked to repeat your number it is not because of inattention, but a passing automobile or heavy team has drowned your voice.
New neighborhood — James L. Wellington, bookkeeper for the Hines & Smith Co. has moved his family to Caribou onto the E.E. Welts farm, back Presque Isle road.
75 Years Ago-July 29, 1937
To have new quarters — Currier and Mocker, furniture dealers, are making preparations to move their business location and stock to the store recently vacated by Henry Marr. The new remodeled headquarters will allow considerable more floor space and a more complete line of merchandise.
Recalls early town history — Isaac “Babe” Thibodeau has rounded out 45 years as a barber right here in Caribou. Born in Connor Plantation in 1870, he learned the trade of barber in the shop of George Hopkins on Main Street — one of three barber shops in Caribou at the time. The others were run by C.P. Hussey and George Roberts. “When I first came to Caribou there was no building on Sweden Street, now the main business artery, except a residence on the site of the present post office,” he recalled.
Mapping Aroostook from the air — Headquartered in Caribou were Howard Aslop, pilot and Herbert Munson, photographer, who were conducting aerial mapping of Aroostook County for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
50 Years Ago-July 26, 1962
New telephone company manager — Alvas Rand Jr., formerly commercial manager in the Rockland office of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, has been promoted to manager of the central Aroostook County office in Presque Isle. He succeeds Bruce Truesdale.
Installed DAV leaders — New officers taking their stations with the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary were Mrs. Flora Tarbox, adjutant; Mrs. Audry Ryzmick, senior vice commander; Mrs. Mary Ricker, commander; Mrs. Francis Reagas, junior vice commander; Mrs. Lena Grenier, chaplain; Mrs. Toney Brirou, patriotic instructor; and Mrs. Mildred Smart, conductress.
Make the grade — Caribou students who made the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Maine were Philip Brown Jr., Gail Kelley, John Lagerstrom, Brian Lister and Judith Newell.
If it fits, it ships? — Bud McNeil and Burt Violette, employees of the Caribou Post Office, reported an interesting piece of news — resident David Michaud brought in a letter to the parcel post window measuring four feet by 20 inches and requiring 37 four-cent stamps.
25 Years Ago-July 29, 1987
Hanging up his whistle — Gerry Duffy, who has guided the boys varsity basketball team at Caribou High School since 1966, said the 1987-88 season would be his last one. The 1969 Vikings squad won the state championship.
