A “Shoreline Buffer Planting and Designing” workshop was held recently at Nickerson Lake as part of the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District’s water quality grant through the Maine DEP. The workshop was led by Jeff O’Donal of O’Donal’s Nursery in Gorham. O’Donal brought a selection of shrubs, trees and perennials and talked about planning a buffer and how to begin planting one section at a time. He also discussed the many benefits of shoreline buffers to lake water quality and provided a general overview of shoreland zoning laws. Educational workshops related to improving water quality is an important part of the grant project and this workshop was one of four held during the past two years.
