HOULTON — With school just around the corner, local ministries are doing their part to make sure children have the supplies they need for a successful year.
On Saturday, Aug. 11, Adopt-A-Block of Aroostook held its 4th Annual Block Party and Backpack Giveaway in Monument Park. This community event traditionally draws hundreds of residents from Houlton and the surrounding areas and this year’s gathering was no exception.

“We had a fun-filled day that included a bounce house for the kids, free clothing give-a-ways, a hot dog barbecue, free groceries and produce, face painting, crafts, games, and of course the backpack giveaway,” said Tammie Goetsch, one of the event organizers. “The nearly 225 backpacks that were given away were generously provided and filled with school supplies by local churches and businesses that Adopt-A-Block of Aroostook partnered with this year.”
This year, the Block Party hosted some special guests. Luis Quintanilla, originally from El Salvador but currently living in Los Angeles and connected with the Dream Center, came all the way to Houlton for the event.
“Luis shared a fun and interactive gospel presentation for all the families present,” Goetsch said. “Paget Rhee from City Gate ministries in Washington, DC, was also present for the Block Party and offered her experience in coordinating special events.”
Adopt-A-Block of Aroostook organizers extended thier thanks to those businesses and individuals who helped to make this Block Party a success. Those interested in being a part of Adopt-A-Block of Aroostook should contact Goetsch at aab@houltonmsbc.org or at (207) 532-2783 x 102.
