Madawaska Lake resident Bill Duncan currently has a fine art exhibit on display at the Blake Library at University of Maine at Fort Kent, featuring paintings of photographs and prints of St. John Valley scenes. Shown here is a painting by Duncan titled “St. John River Bridge.”

FORT KENT — A fine art exhibit titled “Specifically Saint John: views across the upper river watershed” by William Lloyd Duncan of Madawaska Lake will be shown in the gallery at the Blake Library on the University of Maine at Fort Kent campus through Friday, Sept. 28.

The works shown are paintings of photographs and prints.

“My current work explores my ‘pride of place’ through the landscapes and townscapes of northern Maine and western New Brunswick,” says Duncan.

Duncan is originally from Caribou, and currently lives and works at his home-studio on Madawaska Lake.

Duncan graduated in 2002 from Vermont College with a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art. He also is a graphic designer and photographer.

“One technique I employ, painting on photographs, produces very realistic images in spite of the impressionistic strokes of the coloring medium,” Duncan said. “There is a certain tension in the realization that a photograph underlies the paint, but I enjoy the drama.”

The public is invited to view the exhibit during library hours. There will be a public art talk by the artist on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.
