PRESQUE ISLE — Police are warning citizens to be aware of the latest scam, after a local woman fell victim following a phone call about her computer.

The Presque Isle Police Department received a call around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 from a 65-year-old resident reporting problems with her Internet and computer. She told police she’d received a call from several individuals, claiming to be from PC Tech Support, telling her that her computer needed updating.

The resident allowed them to remote connect to her computer over the Internet. While connected to her computer, they told her they needed her credit card information to update her system. When the woman refused to give the information, the callers became irate and damaged her computer remotely to the point the resident said she cannot use it any longer.

Police are advising people to be cautious of ever allowing anyone to remotely connect to your computer and, as always, be cautious about giving out personal information.

If you believe you have been a victim of a scam or wish to report what you believe to be a scam, call the PIPD at 764-4476 or your local law enforcement office.
