The Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey Association (SAMHA) is kicking off their season with an opening skill clinic with former NHL player Barrett Heisten.
Heisten played at the University of Maine before he was signed with the New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, and New York Islanders. Heisten has conducted skill clinics on two prior occasions for SAMHA. SAMHA players should take advantage of an opportunity to learn from a veteran player and coach as he shares his experience. The fact that he played at U-Maine is an added bonus for local players, who often skate at the Alfond Arena.
Heisten will work with the SAMHA coaches and players for the first week of practice beginning Oct. 1. This is a tremendous opportunity for SAMHA families, especially since SAMHA is funding the clinic. The Board of Directors voted to keep the fees the same as last year and typically clinics and tournaments have to be funded by the parents.
Also, SAMHA is in need of adult volunteers to coach this season. Hockey experience or knowledge is an asset, but not required. Coaches are needed for ages four to 15.
Anyone interested in working with area youth, call Kinsman Corthell at 538-6730 or fill out a coaching application at www.samhahockey.org.
Application deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 19.
