The ‘Red, White, Blue’ scramble held over the 3-day Labor Day weekend (could have played any day and as many times as you wished) was a huge success and great fun … especially for Ben Walker, as he got his first career ace on the 293 yard par 4 sixth hole. Ben hit a high fade with his driver over the trees and water and into the cup! Quite a shot, as many try it, but the result rarely lands on the green, let alone in the hole! Congratulations, Ben! Maybe your second hole-in-one will be more conventional by getting it on a par-3! Another big hole was the par-5 second, where the team of Nick Cullen, Parker Walker, Steve Walker and Tim Thoreson got a double eagle two, which was good for a skin. Ben’s team (his dad, Warren, Tim Prescott and Dave Dubois) obviously got a skin on number six. The only other skin in the long weekend tourney was an eagle on the par-5 thirteenth, which was recorded by the team of Scot Walker, Steve Merry, Steve Walker and Tim Thoreson.

The strategy for the scramble was interesting as where teams chose to use the various tee-boxes was a big part of the challenge. The only common denominators for the whole three days were red always on holes 2 and 15; white only on hole 16; and no holes were played exclusively from the blues (though all but one team played blue on #7). Holes ten, seventeen, and eighteen were the most varied as they were almost equally split among the three tee boxes. Only one hole yielded no birdies for the entire weekend, the relatively easy par-3 eleventh. Another interesting feature was where to use the two team mulligans, as only one could be used on a green.

The top gross winners were, first with a 54, the team of Dave Dubois, Ben Walker, Tim Prescott and Warren Walker. There was a tie for second with 57’s with the Houlton contingency of Dave Edgar, Greg Palmer, Peter Stanley and Steve Henderson (they were also second net with a score of 47.9); and the local team of Scot Walker, Steve Merry, Tim Thoreson and Steve Walker. Next with 60 was the team of Ben Walker, John Byron, Cross and Tim Prescott; they were followed by Nick Cullen, Parker Walker, Steve Walker and Tim Thoreson with a 61. The top net teams were Greg Payne, Peter Blood, Ralph Powers and Ted Pettengill with a net of 47.2. They were followed by the above named Houlton team with their 47.9 and then by Brandon McCarthy, Jill McCarthy and Kyle and Nicole with 48.5. At 48.6 net was the team of Nick Cullen, Parker Walker, Steve Walker and Tim Thoreson. Closest to the pin winners were Steve Merry on #4; Scot Walker on #7; Brandon McCarthy on #11 and Kevin Craig on #16. The longest drive on number nine was David Dubois. A complete list of scores is posted in the pro shop.

The feedback for the Red/White/Blue scramble has been fantastic … it is something folks definitely want to do again and more often! In fact, we will do one over the long Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 6, 7, 8) … so plan your team(s), play any of the three days, on as many teams as you want, $10/person per team/four person teams. There will be various winners, including highest total age (lowest score for those teams totaling over 275 years), lowest age (lowest score for those totaling under 60 years), plus skins, pins, longest drive and the normal gross and net winners.

Ben’s famous (or rather infamous) ‘Revenge …Cry-baby’ scramble is this coming Sat. the 15th, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. For those not familiar with the format, it is a three-person scramble, with the trick being that Ben Walker, the golf course superintendent, sets up the course a little weird! He does it really silly, with odd tee-off placements, stupid pins (Ben’s words) and who knows what else. It is usually anything but fair, but the challenge is always interesting. The entry is $20/person with prizes for both gross and net.

In the Tuesday morning ladies day, the play of the day was a two-person scramble. The top three teams were Goldie Gushee/Betty Smallwood; Pattie Hartin/Carol Blood; and Terry Pettengill/Connie Hollis. The ladies continue on Tuesdays as long as the weather permits.

In couples’ golf on Sunday, a red, white and blue scramble was played with three couples per team. It was a little different than a normal red/white/blue as the men only played the blues, the women only the reds and a pick of three to do the whites. Finishing first place was the team of Stuart/Becky Kelley, Ralph/Valerie Powers and Ola/Diana Tucker. Second place was Jenness/Goldie Gushee, Peter/Carol Blood and Ted/Terry Pettengill. Finishing third was Greg/Sara Douglas, Francis/Sally Cyr and Greg Gaines/Bev Osborn. The most any one person played was six holes and the least was three holes.

Coming, the ‘Red Zone’ or maybe ‘Seeing Red’ on Sept. 22, we’ll hold a ‘Red Tee Box’ scramble … so get your team together and see how low you can go! Entry is just $5/player, four person teams, with gross and net prizes overall and prizes for low gross women’s team (the ladies will have special tee boxes to shorten the course for them, too) and low gross student team. This tournament is sort of like playing a par-3 course, so this is a little something out of the norm as we play a ‘different course’ for a Saturday. We’ll do a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
