Clarification on photo credits

Two photos of newly-crowned Pre-Teen Miss Presque Isle 2012 Miranda Drost and Junior Miss Presque Isle 2012 Lindsey Lagerstrom that appeared on the front of the Sept. 5 issue of The Star-Herald were taken by Madison Michaud, a senior at Presque Isle High School, and submitted by Lisa Dow for publication.

Several photos of the 2012 Washburn pageant contestants which appeared on pages 3A, 5A and 10A of the same issue were actually taken by Mikaela Faye, and submitted by Washburn correspondent Beth Boddy.

When processing, newspaper staff tag photos as “photo courtesy of,” crediting whoever submitted them, when we do not know specifically who took them. By saying “courtesy of” simply lets our readers know who provided us with the photos, not that they necessarily took them. By crediting someone, this allows anyone looking for a photo in a past issue to be able to go to the source who provided us with the image. This is particularly helpful to historians/genealogists. We use “photo by” when we know who took the photo.

We hope this helps clarify how our photos are credited.
