Turkey Trot attracts 125 participants

CARIBOU — A  total of 105 runners and 20 walkers were on hand to burn off some Thanksgiving meal calories by taking part in the annual Turkey Trot 5K Road Race.

The overall winner was Spencer McElwain of Caribou, whose time was 15 minutes and 38 seconds.

A field of 105 runners, one dog and an additional 20 walkers participated in Saturday’s Turkey Trot 5K, held in Caribou. The overall title went to Spencer McElwain of Caribou, whose time was 15 minutes and 38 seconds. The annual event served as the final road race of the 2012 Aroostook County racing season.

Just 11 seconds back was Curtis Wheeler in 15:49. Thomas Grylka placed third in 17:07 and Shawn Berry was fourth in 17:48.

Rounding out the top-10 were Mark Davenport, 18:15; Thomas Beckum, 18:44; Lucas Kinney, 19:21; Chris Rines, 19:34; Jeff Ashby, 19:40; and Mike Smith, 19:49.

The fastest female was Kayla Legassie of Presque Isle, who clocked the course in 20:28. She finished 12th overall.

Other top female racers were Julie Carson (22nd overall, 21:24), Marie Beckum (24th, 21:34), Kim Wright (25th, 21:36) and Angela Ewings (26th, 22:04).

It’s become an annual tradition — the chef (Waldo Libby) attempting to catch the turkey (Paul Lamoreau) in the final road race of 2012, Saturday’s Turkey Trot 5K in Caribou.  The turkey was able to escape once again to set up another rematch in November of 2013.

The top five in the walker’s division were Jared Harvey, 44:02; Alex Sprague, 44:13; Joan Lapage, 44:46.3; Emily Bell, 44:46.6; and Patty Carson, 44:46.8.
