Notable act of kindness — Letter to the editor: Last Sabbath, while walking Main Street, I saw a boy cover up a horse whose blanket had blown off, showing how much more thoughtful the boy
was than several men who passed by the same place. I often read of the kind acts of Boy Scouts and if you will kindly call the attention of this to the Boy Scouts of Houlton, I think that much suffering of our dumb animals would be avoided. Respectfully yours, Chas. H. Fogg.
At the opera house — In an interview with Manager French of the Heywood Opera House we learned that a deal is about closed whereby stores under the opera house will be transformed into a first class motion picture and vaudeville theater.

Littleton school burns — The Hone School in Littleton was leveled by fire Saturday afternoon. Volunteers worked fast to remove seats, books, maps and other school equipment. A faulty flue or chimney obstruction is believed to have been the cause. Renovations are being made on the home of Fred Foster for the 25 students, taught by Mrs. Benjamin Sweet, as school sessions resume next week.
New J. C. Penney store — J. C. Penney Company, headquartered in New York City, announced today the store and basement in the Green Block on the south side of Houlton’s Market Square has been leased for one of its department stores. Plans call for a new store with 42-foot frontage and a 100-foot depth.

Lumberman’s Museum elects officers — At the annual meeting of the Patten Lumberman’s Museum held Jan. 2, Francis Dunn was elected president; Frank Pelletier, vice-president; Willard McIntyre, treasurer; Caleb Scribner and Lore A. Rogers, curators; and Katherine Rogers, clerk. The Museum stems from a small collection of articles of historic interest, acquired over the years by Caleb Scribner.

Ricker Snow Ball announced — The theme for Ricker College’s 1963 Snow Ball weekend March 1st and 2nd is “Worlds Fair,” the social board announced Wednesday. Board Chairman Lloyd Farnham said the traditional snow sculpture, coronation parade and grand ball will have an international theme.

A healthier lifestyle — “Plant a Seed, Reap a Harvest” is the workshop to be presented by the Houlton Chemical People Task Force, Feb. 9 and Feb. 11 at Houlton High School with instructor Valerie Flewelling, an AMHC prevention specialist. Participants learn about substance abuse risk factors and ways to offer youth the support they need.
Of interest to environmentalists — Senator Margaret G. Ludwig reports in her column, “Scene at the Senate,” The state will no longer purchase disposable polystyrene containers and that the governor will introduce legislation to ban the sale of chlorofluorocarbon containers throughout the state.
