HAINES, Herbert Clayton “Herbie”, 83, FORT FAIRFIELD, at Caribou, January 9, 2013. Interment will take place later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Arrangements are in the care of Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
FORT FAIRFIELD – Herbert Clayton “Herbie” Haines, 83, husband of the late Mary E. (Perkins) Haines, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Wednesday evening, January 9, 2013, at a Caribou healthcare facility after a brief illness. He was born November 25, 1929, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Keene Sr. and Myrtle (McCall) Haines.
Herbie attended Fort Fairfield schools and proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1947 to 1951, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was married to Mary E. Perkins on October 22, 1952. He had been employed with the U.S. Civil Service at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, for 32 years as a hydraulic mechanic until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Haines was a life member of the Korean War Veterans, a life member of the National Rifle Assoc., a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the Fort Fairfield American Legion, Walter Lovely Post Number 27, the Marine Corps League, and the Fort Fairfield Rifle and Pistol Club. Mr. Haines had also been a long time member of the Fort Fairfield Bethel Baptist Church.
Herbie was extremely proud of his Haines heritage, being one of the first families to settle the area. Herbie will also be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He had a special appreciation for birds, feeding them year round and was an accomplished flower gardener.
In addition to his parents, Herbie was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary E. Haines on February 3, 2002; six brothers, Keene Jr., Vaughn, Robert, Roland, Lester and Kenneth Haines. He was also preceded in death by his companion, Helen Doherty in 2010.
Herbie is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Michael Kelley of Washburn, Linda and Steve Self of Clarksville, AR, and Tammy and Patrick Garrard of Newberry Springs, CA; five grandchildren, Mike H. Kelley of Castle Hill, Mark J. Kelley of Mapleton, Kelsey H. Self of Clarksville, AR, and Cameron H. and Cassidy H. Garrard, both of Newberry Springs, CA; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Katelyn Kelley of Castle Hill, Kaiden Kelley of Mapleton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Herbie also leaves behind his special friend and caregiver, Shirley Bartlett of Fort Fairfield.
The family of Mr. Haines extends a sincere thank you to Cary Medical Center for the exceptional care given to Herbie during his stay there.
Friends called Sunday, January 13, 2013, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. with Larry Jenkins officiating. Interment will take place later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may contribute in memory of Mr. Haines to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
