WALLAGRASS — A Presque Isle man sustained injuries Jan. 9 while snowmobiling with a friend on ITS 85.
“Two Aroostook County men were headed south on interconnecting trail system (ITS) 85 in Wallagrass around 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 9 when the accident occurred,” said John MacDonald, spokesperson for the Maine Warden Service.
According to MacDonald, the operator of the first snowmobile, Mike Cyr, 44, of Presque Isle, called Fort Kent Ski Doo to report the crash on his cell phone.
“The first snowmobile failed to negotiate a right-hand turn on the Wallagrass Lakes Road (ITS 85 in the winter). A second sled, operated by Eddie Boutot, 69, of Presque Isle, was following too closely in the snow dust and struck the rear end of Cyr’s sled as it slowed to a stop,” said MacDonald.
Speed was estimated to be around 30 to 35 mph, said MacDonald.
“Boutot suffered a broken right leg. Cyr complained of shoulder pain. The crash was five miles from the nearest road,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald said there was substantial front-end damage to Boutot’s snowmobile and moderate damage to Cyr’s machine.
“The subjects were located, treated and transported from the scene by Warden Gary Sibley, volunteers and Fort Kent Fire and Ambulance personnel. Boutot was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent,” said MacDonald.
The case remains under investigation.
