Attending the Boy Scouts’ junior leadership training event were, in no particular order: Andrew Lagassie, Tyler Jardine, Carvor Pendexter, Alex Hyde, Paul Tardie, Austin McGraw, Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Daniel Roy, Tim Roix, Bryce Roix, Taylor Skinner and Caleb Thompson.

The training was held at Camp Harrison and brought the 2013 junior leaders together to learn their roles for the coming year. The Scouts also planned their events, fundraisers and monthly programs for the 2013 program year.

Saturday night was a full Dutch oven supper with the boys cooking several specialties from over the years and culminated with watching the ever-popular “Follow Me Boys” movie later in the evening.

Sunday featured a court of honor potluck dinner with the parents attending. Those attending were: Andrew Lagassie, Tyler Jardine, Carvor Pendexter, Alex Hyde, Paul Tardie, Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Daniel Roy, Tim Roix, Bryce Roix, Taylor Skinner and Caleb Thompson.

Troop 177 is always looking for new members 11 years old and over and meet each Thursday night at Camp Harrison in Washburn. The troop is currently planning their summer two-week trip to the National Jamboree in West Virginia during July.

Dribbling expert visits school

On Friday, Jan. 4, Washburn Elementary students were gathered for an exciting treat. Corey Rich, a well-known basketball dribbling expert, entertained students and staff with a variety of skills that included dribbling six basketballs at once, playing “dribble keep away” with up to four students at once, and a spirited game of “catch that pass” won by Makayla Shackett.

Corey also left the students with a very important message entitled “READ,” which stands for: R = respect yourself and others, E = enthusiasm with everything you do, A = activity is always important, and D = determination.

A big thank you goes out to Mr. Shawn Savage for securing this fun and enjoyable presentation for the students of WDES!  You can watch a video of this event on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiGiKzsquwc.

Student of the Month

Congratulations to Kolby Koch, the Student of the Month. Kolby, a senior at WDHS, is one girl who knows how to manage her time! Her assignments at school this year include being the editor of the yearbook, the president of the WDHS chapter of the NHS and the secretary/treasurer of the Senior Class.

In her spare time, Kolby spends her time writing. She is now completing her first novel and hopes to be published soon.

    Good luck, Kolby!

A Day in the Life…

Snapshot 2012 was held during the week of Oct. 15. One hundred twenty-seven libraries across the state, including Washburn’s, participated in this semi-annual event.

The event is a record of what happens during a typical day at the library. Sometimes we forget about the wealth of resources right here in our school community and our local library. Maine K-12 students have an excellent library of books to enjoy, our high school students have access to free e-books and audiobooks — both through the website and through the Maine InfoNet Library link. Everyone has access to MARVEL, a huge resource including dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers, journals and magazines online.

Are these new to you? Check them out!  Information on this event can be found at www.maine.gov/msl/snapshot/2012snapshot.pdf.
