SACAP announces Lewis Taavi Wirta art scholarship

    HOULTON — The Board of Directors of SACAP (Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project) established the Lewis Taavi Wirta Art Scholarship in 2008. A scholarship of $500 is awarded to a 2013 graduating senior from one of the area high schools or to an eligible home schooled student who plans to pursue

a career in the arts.
    “Our hope is to foster creativity and self-expression through the arts for our young artists,” said Iva Sussman of SACAP. “We encourage students to go to their high school’s Guidance Office for an application or stop by the Visions Art Gallery at 66 Main Street, Houlton.”
    Past recipients have been: Callie Foster-Hodgdon High School, Alexander Bishhop- Southern Aroostook High School, Paul Griffin-Home Schooled, and Isaac Brown- Houlton High School.
    Lewis Taavi Wirta was born on Dec. 12, 1954 and died June 7, 2008. A gifted musician, Wirta loved to play music and share music with others. For more information please contact SACAP, 532-9119 or e-mail: sacap@pioneercable.net.
