Caribou girls swim past WA

The Caribou swim team made the trip to Bangor Saturday to take on Hampden Academy in a meet held at Husson University.

The Viking boys lost, 89-37, while the girls fell by a score of 113-29.

Darren Newbegin placed second in both the 50-yard freestyle (27.63 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.07). He was also on a pair of relay teams, the 200 and 400 freestyle, that finished as runners-up.

Grant Bennett was also on both relay teams and added a third in the 100 freestyle (1:06.57) and the 50 freestyle (27.72 seconds). Austin Scott was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.33, third in the 200 free in 2:31 and joined Newbegin, Bennett and Tom McLean as members of the second-place relay teams.

The Caribou girls were led by Rachel Wasson, who was second in the 500 freestyle in 7:30.85 and third in the 200 free in 2:53.22.

The 200 medley relay team, made up of Wasson, Katie Pelletier, Krsna Johnson and Laksmis Johnson, took second place in 2:47.37.

On Jan. 12, the Vikes hosted Washington Academy in Limestone. The girls won, 73-46, while the Caribou boys were edged out, 62-53.

Viking individual winners were Wasson in the 200 freestyle (2:55.58) and the 500 freestyle (7:39.08) and L. Johnson in the 100 freestyle (1:24.79).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Olivia Engstrom, Pelletier, Brenan Page and Johnson was also victorious in 2:38.38. The 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Wasson, Engstrom, Page and K. Johnson, won in 6:04.45.

For the boys, claiming individual wins were Scott in the 200 free (2:36.68), Bennett in the 100 free (1:12.65) and Seth Paddleford in the 100 breaststroke (1:38.36).

The 400 freestyle relay team of Bennett, McLean, Scott and Newbegin won its race in 4:50.49.

The Vikings are back in the pool for competition next Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Presque Isle for a 4 p.m. meet.
