The Vikings traveled to Dexter Saturday thinking they were going to compete in a tournament, but since five teams ended up dropping out, Caribou instead took part in three dual meets.
The Vikes won two of three and their record in head-to-head meets is now 5-2.
“Our team is designed to be a tournament team, so we were caught off guard,” said Caribou coach “Chico” Hernandez, “but we beat a good Class C team in Madison, while losing to the defending Class C state champs [Foxcroft] and runner-up [Dexter].”
The 41-36 victory over the Bulldogs was made possible thanks to a win by Tsion McLeod in the 106 lb. division.
McLeod pinned Josh Shull in 1:52.
“We needed that one if we were to have any chance of winning, and Tsion came through,” Hernandez said.
Also picking up victories for Caribou in contested matches were Michael Selander in 152 and Matt Manter in 195. Tre Caudill (113), Brendan Wood (132) and Robert Caudill (138) all won on forfeits.
The Vikes scored 11 points in the loss to the host Dexter Tigers. Tre Caudill pinned his opponent and Wood won by technical fall for Caribou’s points.
Against Foxcroft, a 60-23 loss, Wood prevailed by pin, Selander won on a technical fall and Jacob Burby (182) and Manter were forfeit winners.
Hernandez said Robert Caudill, who took first in two recent tourneys, is injured and may miss the remainder of the season.
Caribou next competes in the Penobscot Valley Conference championships, to be held Saturday at Bucksport.
