This group of women, who called themselves the Caribou Clydesdales, proved to be the stronger team during a tug-o-war competition on Feb. 26, 1991 as part of Caribou’s Winter Carnival snowmobile cookout and fun day at Collins Pond. The event was sponsored by the Caribou Lions Club and the Snowmobile Clubs of Caribou. The women competed against the Caribou Mooserunners team.

CARIBOU — The Caribou Winter Carnival has been a tradition in the community for numerous years. With activities such as a snow sculpture competition, Ladies Night Out, Casino Night, outhouse racing, the Kiwanis Keystone Kops and a variety of recreational and sporting events, the two-week-long carnival serves as a useful tool to break up the monotony of northern Maine’s long, harsh winters.

February is fast approaching, which means it is time to begin planning for the 2013 event. The Caribou Area Chamber of Commerce held a planning meeting on Jan. 8. Unfortunately, only one organization attended.

William Tasker, CACC director, and Kathy Mazzuchelli, Caribou’s recreation department director, will conduct another meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Wellness Center. The directors will use attendance at this second meeting as a gauge to determine the community’s interest in continuing with the tradition.

Any organization interested in hosting or planning a carnival event is encouraged to attend.
