Ricker Rumbings
by Lois Downing

Hope this short encounter finds you all well and happy. We were sorry to learn of the death of Connie Barry’s brother, Bruce, who died recently in another state, (I think Tennessee). Sister Miriam Teresa Callnan was a visitor of Evelyn Callnan last Saturday. Sister Miriam lives in Portland and is a retired nun. I was sorry I missed meeting her. Sister and Evelyn had a great visit together She was on her way to Millinocket to visit friends and relatives.
We are sorry to report Doris Hogan is a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital, after a fall at her apartment. I’m not sure where Doris is at the time of printing. Get well, Doris. We are preparing for a Valentine party sometime in February, to be announced soon. Have you prepared your Valentine for your loved one yet?
Pray for all those who are less fortunate than you are. No matter how we feel, there is someone out there suffering. About angels: Listen to the whispers from heaven, feel the love in your heart, and know that angels are nearby. Keep well, sleep well and God bless.

Friends and Needles Quilt Guild

The Friends and Needles Quilt Guild met on Jan. 8 at Houlton Regional Hospital.  A thank-you note was read to us by Jennifer Metzger from Ark Animal Sanctuary for the donation that the group made to the Ark.
Metzger also notified the quilt guild that both of the scholarships to last year’s high school graduates were delivered.
Kim Hazlett reported that a call went out to all the Project Linus chapters in response to the Sandy Hook tragedy. They were asking for a total of 700 quilts. That request was filled within 15 minutes. The Friends and Needles Quilt Guild sent 20 quilts from the cupboard. Thank you one and all for your time, talents and finished quilts for children in crisis to receive.
Patterns are available for those who still want or need them for the Guild’s Mystery Quilt. A workshop will be held Saturday, March 9. A sign-up sheet is still available as well as the first set of the instructions. For more information see Metzger or Karen Gallop.
Golden Harvest cutting and wall hanging prep day is set for Saturday, March 30.  On Saturday, May 11 will be the actual workshop for sewing using paper piecing. Sign up is available now.
Don’t forget about items for the March Auction.
Kudos to the Guild’s new web master Cass Miskelly. The Guild has received compliments on their website from the Area 7 representative, as well as the state quilt guild.
It is still unresolved if the Guild will need permission to display a quilt where a pattern has been used by a quilter, so it has been decided to get permission from that designer.  A permission letter will be posted on the Guild’s website. For more information, contact Metzger, Gallop or Carmel Bowers to assist with the note.
Old patterns like the log cabin, drunkard’s path and others are what are called public domain. They have been around for nearly 100 years or more and it unclear as to the original designer. So no permission is needed.
This year’s challenge quilt, which will be shown at the August quilt show, will be about  Cat Tails/Cat Tales/ Cattails.  A quilt can be about one, two or all three cat items.
Metzger is reminding guild members to be thinking about who they would like as a president next year.
February hostesses are Pam Mailman, Mary Ann Stewart and Tammy Ritchie.
