CARIBOU — The Aroostook Youth Ski Festival is a chance for area youths ages 5 to 14 to experience and celebrate all the “cool” ways to move on cross-country skis. This year’s festival will be held Friday morning, Feb. 22 at the Caribou High School ski trails.
Some of the ski challenges include speed skiing, with a radar gun to measure each skier’s speed; the barrel sprints, and the wild and winding terrain park. The day’s activities will also include group games such as the adventure trail, bean-bag biathlon and ski limbo.
The exciting finale will be an ultimate sharks and minnows game on the Caribou soccer field.
Participants will be divided into age groups, and can engage in any or all of the day’s activities. The event fee is $5 and includes participation in all activities, snacks, a T-shirt and gift bag.
As a special highlight, the L.L. Bean Bootmobile will be at the event all day, spreading the L.L. Bean message of outdoor fun. There will also be appearances by Nordie, the mascot for the Maine Winter Sports team, and the Viking mascot of Caribou High School.
Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Caribou High School ski building, and participants need to register with a parent or group chaperone. Events begin at 9:40 a.m. and the program will conclude with a recognition ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Participants should bring their own skis, boots and poles, with a limited number available on a first-come basis.
