As part of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Brain Awareness Week festivities, the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library and Wintergreen Arts Center will be presenting a new Brain Art Contest for K-12 students throughout central Aroostook County.
Inspired by the contest’s three brain-related themes, young artists have created works that express how kids make their brains better (grades K-2), the coolest things that our brains help us do (grades 3-5) and why brain research is important (grades 6 and up). Community members will be able to view these submissions and vote for their favorites during a public exhibit being held at Turner Memorial Library on Second Street on Friday, March 1, from 6-8 p.m. during Presque Isle’s First Friday Downtown Art Walk. Contest winners will be announced and recognized during a special ceremony being held at Wintergreen Arts Center on Tuesday, March 15, at 5:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to attend additional Brain Awareness Week programs being offered in the Star City this year, including a ceramic brain painting event being held on Wednesday, March 20. at 5:30 p.m. at the UMPI Art Studio (Pullen Hall) and a Wii gaming event on Saturday, March 16, from 1-2:30 p.m. at The Whole Potato Cafe, in partnership with The Aroostook Medical Center’s Neuro Rehabilitation Department.
