GORHAM — Five MSSM students will be headed to Washington, D.C. in April to compete in the National Science Bowl after winning the 13th annual Maine Regional Science Bowl over the weekend.
Two teams from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone took the trek down to the University of Southern Maine, Gorham Campus for the March 2 competition, with members of Team A bringing home the gold. A team from Bangor High School placed second and coming in third was Waynflete High School in Portland.

There were 11 Maine schools represented at Saturday’s competition, with 17 teams vying for the win; the competition allowed for up to two teams from each school to participate.
Competition in the science bowl consisted of multiple choice and short answer questions that covered categories of biology, chemistry, earth and space science, energy, mathematics and physics.
Placing first were Team A members Belle O’Bryon of Hallowell, Rachel Olugbemi and William Popov, both of Presque Isle, Roger Van Peski of Northport and Lucy Wilcox of New Gloucester; the team was chaperoned by Dr. Deb Eustis-Grandy, MSSM Science Department chair and biology instructor.
Also competing in the regional competition were the five members of Team B, which consisted of Bethany Hartley of Whitefield, Max Holtzman of Rockport, Kate Keresey of Alton, Meghan Goodell of North Haven, and Mia Harrow-Mortelliti of Holden; they were chaperoned by Dr. Greg Hamlin, MSSM computer science instructor.
“Both teams did a great job,” said Eustis-Grandy. “The winning team is very excited to be traveling to Washington, D.C. in April.”
MSSM’s Team A will compete at the National Science Bowl finals to be held April 25 – 29 in Washington, D.C. In addition to the all-expense paid trip to the national competition, covered by the U.S. Department of Energy, sponsor of the Science Bowl, the winning team members each received a Nook eReader.
