100 Years Ago-Mar. 12, 1913

Of local interest — Miss Margaret Cowan, who has a host of friends in Houlton, left Tuesday for New York City where she will take a course in Surgery and Hospital Management at Mount Sinai Hospital. Ralph Sawyer has purchased the Jas. Roach house on West St. through the Harmon Real Estate Dealer. Miss Mollie Farrar, who finished a successful term of school at Corner House, returned to her home in North Amity this week.

Good road to Haynesville — At the County Commissioners meeting, a tax of $305.37 in Township 3 R.2 and $275.50 in A. R. 2 were assessed for the purpose of repairing the road from Linneus to Haynesville. It is expected the state will appropriate the sum of $500 for the same purpose. The Com’rs have appointed have appointed A. G. Chambers of Haynesville as agent to expend this money.

News from Crystal — Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. John Prescott returned Sunday from Florida. They spent twelve days in Bradenton where they have an interest in potatoes and studied the growth and diseases of the tubers. Percy Moran, who has employment on the farm of Lewis Callahan in Hodgdon, spent the weekend at the home of his brother, Allie Moran.
Greens Store to open — Greens will open their new store in the former location of the F. P. Berry Company about April 1, Alfred Green announced this week. The store will occupy two floors with the second floor devoted to apparel for ladies, suits, dresses, hosiery and other accessories. Two lines of children’s dresses, Shirley Temple and Deanna Durbin, will also be carried.

Fluoride goes to vote — On Monday, residents of Houlton will be asked to vote on the question of whether or not fluoride should be added to the town’s public water supply. Beginning next week, all bicycles in town must be registered and licensed; the cost to have a license tag issued is 25 cents. John E. Scovil has accepted a position in the prescription department of French’s Drug Store. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Scovil.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-11HOTEL NAMES — Oscar F. French, proprietor of French’s Drug Store, was elected president of the Northland Hotel Corporation during the annual meeting, to succeed Alan Clark. Other officers include Aubrey McLaughlin, George Roach, Leland Ludwig and Albert Putnam.

Cameras compared — Three motion pictures plus slides shown by Harold Hughes were seen Friday night during a meeting of the Shiretown Camera Club at the Gentle Memorial Building. The slides were taken on a new single lens reflex camera, and Hughes pointed out advantages of this type over a rangefinder camera.

Daffodil days — Volunteers will be presenting daffodils Friday to those to donate to the fight against cancer. All proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society. To donate for your daffodil, purchases may be made Ames, Houlton IGA, Sherwin Williams, Coles Shoe Store and North Road Market.

Health Fair collaboration — Houlton Junior/Senior High School and Houlton Regional Hospital announce their first Joint Community Health Fair on March 31 in the school gymnasium. Just a few of the day’s activities include: health screenings, child fingerprinting, a historical display of medical equipment, a performance titled “The Healing Potential of Music,” and a display of the Maine State Police’s Batmobile.
