For 14 years, the local American Red Cross chapter has recognized some of the real heroes among us — people whose courage, kindness and unselfish character deserve public recognition.
This year’s Real Heroes Breakfast on Friday, April 5 at the Northern Maine Community College will honor 15 local individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of those around them.
Celebrated during the event will be Hillary Albert, Fred Parsons and Taylor Willey, all of Presque Isle; Stephanie Beaulieu, Matt McPherson and Jeff Leighton, all of Fort Fairfield; Christopher Daigle and Ruger Bernier of Fort Kent; Jason Parent of Caribou; Jack Reed of Wade; Kent Smith of Blaine; Richard Wark of Mapleton and Olivia Tardie of Ashland.
Businesses honored include Spud Speedway and The Crow’s Nest.
All heroes to be celebrated have performed the heroic act between Feb. 11, 2012 and Feb. 7, 2013.
“The Real Heroes Breakfast grew out of a desire to develop an event that is closely related to the mission of the American Red Cross, which is to help people save lives,” said Joyce Knorr, Aroostook County branch manager. “The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
“Over one million Red Cross volunteers accomplish this every day of the year through the simple, yet powerful process of someone putting his or her own needs aside to help others,” she said. “I can think of no better way to celebrate this spirit of humanitarianism then by nominating and recognizing heroes in our own community.”
Proceeds are used locally to assist Aroostook County disaster victims served by the Red Cross.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Red Cross office located at 7 Hatch Drive Suite 250, or call 493-4620 x108.
The event is sponsored by WAGM-TV 8, The Aroostook Medical Center, NMCC and Cary Medical Center.
