East Grand students enjoy snowboarding at Sugarloaf Mountain

Because of a teacher’s workshop, East Grand students were able to enjoy time at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Dave Conley and Tammi Matula, along with seven East Grand students, spent five days enjoying the snow.
“We stayed on the mountain in a condominium,” explained Conley. “The students enjoyed three great days of boarding and in the evenings, they took advantage of the pool and antigravity gym activities.”

Students on the trip had all been active with the Bigrock outings where they gained necessary skills to make the trip to Sugarloaf more enjoyable, said Conley.
Joining the group was Conley’s sister, Jan, who lives in Portland.
“Jan is an excellent snowboarder and was an example to the students of someone in their 50s enjoying boarding because of the choice to pursue a healthy lifestyle that includes routine exercise and a good diet,” Conley noted.
A few students on the trip still had a bit of homework to do.
“Four eighth-graders came through the ALEKs program, an online math intervention program to assist students with their math skills,” explained Conley. “Before taking part, the students had to complete 60 topics with the ALEKS program, which started in late January. While on the trip, they had to work as a team to solve 18 math problems that were relevant to the outing.
“Three high school Outdoor Education students took part as well,” added Conley. “Several students also earned money to go through five recent car washes held afterschool.”
Attending were: Kim Stoddard, Cassidy Woo, Billy Apgar, Wyatt Oliver, Jan Conley, Philip Farley, Josh Jones and Jake Davis.
