I’m going to compare and contrast Luke and Jen focusing on their families, home life, and their feelings about the rally using quotes from the book to support the information.

First, I’m going to write about their families. Luke is poor because he lives on a farm and his mother works in a factory while his dad raises pigs. “Maybe if they didn’t have you, they could afford everything they want. But he didn’t eat much and all of his clothes were hand me downs from Matthew and Mark.” (Haddix, 101) Jen is rich because they were Barons. Her home has many mirrors, junk food and shopping passes. “Barons are unbelievably rich.” (Haddix, 31) Luke and Jen each had two brothers. Luke played board games and checkers with his brothers but they frequently teased him about being a third child. For example, once one of his brothers told him that the population police was at the door. Moreover, Luke never got a birthday like his brothers. “Somehow Luke never got as old as Matthew and Mark.” (Haddix, 7) Jen also had two brothers. “Two teenaged boys lived there.” (Haddix, 37) Her brothers played many sports such as soccer, baseball and tennis. Luke’s brothers didn’t have the money to participate in all the sports like Jen’s brothers could
Next, I’m going to compare and contrast their home lives. Luke spent most of his time in the attic. He had two attic vents to look out at other houses. He read when he got bored. His mom was there to cuddle and reassure him that everything will be alright. He didn’t go outside but looked at all the construction workers from his attic vent opening. “Some were fat and some were thin some were browned by the sun and some were paler than Luke himself.” (Haddix, 17) In contrast, Jen could spend her time outside shopping because she had s shopping ID. Luke said to Jen, “I thought that you used a fake ID to go shopping with your mom?” (Haddix, 97) Neither Luke or Jen wanted to live in their houses all day. They wanted to go outside. They wanted and needed things to change. “That’s why we’re going to the rally.” (Haddix, 83) Lastly, I’m going to compare and contrast their feelings towards the rally. Luke was scared to be exposed or risk getting killed. Jen’s dad was sad when she died at the rally. She believed that all third children would be set free but she ended up dying instead. “Jen’s dad turned around slowly, You can shoot me he said holding his hands helplessly up in the air, I might even welcome the chance to stop missing Jen.” (Haddix, 132) Jen’s dad is miserable and incredibly sad because Jen died. Luke was upset because the only friend he had known was dead. In conclusion, I compared and contrasted Luke and Jen from Hiddix’s book “Among the Hidden.”
