An insult to our Canadian neighbors

To the editor:
It has been recently brought to my attention that the Department of Homeland Security, through customs and immigration border crossing stations, is considering charging a border crossing fee to all Canadian citizens entering the United States. My initial reaction, when first hearing this, was that it must be a misunderstanding. Upon further inquiry into this issue, I discovered that it was not a rumor, but indeed true.

What is the reasoning; what is going on? These are two countries that have, for centuries, shared the longest undefended border in the world; two countries that have stood side-by-side in two great wars; two countries that have shared common values, common ancestry, and a common heritage.
How truly devastating this act would be! Just about every family in Aroostook County and, for that matter, all of Maine has relatives and friends on both sides of the border. Think of the economic impact on retail stores, both large and small, businesses of all sorts, the potato and wood industry, just to mention a few. Think of the devastating effect it would have on tourism, including summer visitors and winter recreation. What a tremendous insult to our Canadian friends and neighbors.
I sincerely urge you to immediately contact Senator Collins (202) 224-2523, Senator King (202) 224-5344, and Congressman Michaud (202) 225-6306 to denounce this egregious and untimely idea. This is a serious situation that must be addressed without delay.
