PRESQUE ISLE — Carsyn Koch of Washburn and Andrew Lewis of Fort Fairfield were the individual stars and the Caribou boys and girls swept the team competition at the first regular season track and field meet for high school teams, held Friday at the Gehrig Johnson Athletic Complex.
Koch and Lewis, who both were Class C state champions a year ago, won four events each during the meet held in ideal weather conditions, with sunshine and 65 degree temperatures prevailing throughout.
Koch won the girls’ 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes and 46 seconds, took the high jump with a height of 5 feet, captured the 200 in 27.3 seconds and was part of the winning 4×100-meter relay team which prevailed in 54.9 seconds.
She was joined by Kennedy Churchill, Tyra Shaw and Joan Overman on the victorious sprint relay squad.
Lewis dominated the boys’ meet by capturing victories in the high jump at 6-4, the triple jump at 42-1, the discus at 134-4 and the shot put at 43-7.25.
The Caribou girls and boys came away with team titles. The Viking girls used their depth to score 236 points and finish ahead of Fort Fairfield (129), Presque Isle (98), Washburn (61), Fort Kent (21) and Limestone-MSSM (13).
The Viking boys had a tougher challenge, but scored 201.88 points to hold off runner-up Presque Isle, which posted 184.38. Fort Fairfield totaled 106.13, with Limestone-MSSM in fourth with 33.63. Fort Kent had 28 points and Washburn managed a single point.
A few others joined Koch and Lewis with multiple individual wins.
On the girls’ side, Overman coupled her relay victory by tying for first in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds. Fort Fairfield’s Janae Libby, who tied with Overman in the sprint, also took the pole vault by clearing a height of 6-6.
Sarah Doak of Caribou came in first in the 800 in 2:47, claimed the win in the triple jump with a mark of 29-9 and was a leg in the 4×400 relay team which posted a winning time of 4:43.6. Others on that team were Alissa Randolph, Eileen Patton and Olivia Sleeper.
Patton also took the 300 hurdles in 55.8 seconds, while Sleeper captured the 400 in 1:05.2.
Regan Nelson of Presque Isle was a double-winner in throwing events, taking the discus with a mark of 85-9 and the shot put with a mark of 32-6.
For boys, Sean Barbosa of Caribou teamed with Kameron Manter, Alex Losieniecki and Brendan Wood on the winning 4×400-meter relay team, which posted a time of 3:55.6. Barbosa also took the pole vault at 10-6 and the 400-meter dash in 57.8 seconds.
Gabe Player of Presque Isle was first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.5 seconds and also took the 300 hurdles in 45.2 seconds, while teammate Michael Donovan won the 100-meter dash in 11.5 seconds and teamed with Jeremy Gingrich, Matt Tilley and Isaac Estey for the 4×100 relay title in 48.7 seconds.
Also girls winning individual events were the following: Caribou’s 4×800-meter relay team (Elise Gudde, Chelsea Haney, Robyn Larrabee and Kristin Macek), 11:39; Samantha Simonds of Presque Isle, 100 hurdles, 18.1; Bonnie Corey of Presque Isle, 1,600-meter race walk, 9:13; Chelsea Bard of Caribou, 3,200-meter run, 13:05; Hannah Hebert of Caribou, long jump, 14-1.5; and Logan Bubar of Fort Fairfield, javelin, 93-6.
Boys’ winners were: Fort Fairfield’s 4×800-meter relay team (Vincent Campbell, Robbie Watson, Lance McKenney and Brandon York), 9:45; Mitchell St. Peter of Caribou, 1,600-meter race walk, 8:28; Matt Toussaint of Fort Kent, 1,600-meter run, 4:53; Lucas Kinney of Caribou, 800-meter run, 2:15; Caleb Daigle of Fort Fairfield, 200-meter dash, 22.9 seconds; Ron Lund of Caribou, 3,200-meter run, 10:52; Mitchell Ayotte of Presque Isle, long jump, 18-5; and Grant Bennett of Caribou, javelin, 135-4.
Fort Kent’s Robbie Hebert was the lone competitor in the 100-yard wheelchair and 400-yard wheelchair. His time were 40.1 seconds and 3:06.9, respectively. He also had a mark of 9-1 in the wheelchair shot put as the only participant.
Caribou will host a Penobscot Valley Conference meet Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The Aroostook League Championships are Tuesday in Presque Isle with a 4 p.m. start time.
