Johnson gains All-New England honors
WATERVILLE — University of Southern Maine senior Jason Johnson of Mapleton, a Presque Isle High School graduate, earned Div. III All-New England honors Friday by finishing eighth in the grueling two-day, 10-event decathlon at the New England Division III Championships being held at Colby College.
Johnson finished the decathlon with a personal best score of 5,475 points, surpassing his previous best score of 5,376 points set at the Holy Cross Decathlon last month. Senior David Hardison of Bates College won the event with 6,308 points.
In 10th place after the first day of competition, Johnson came on strong during the second day to move up two spots in the final standings. Johnson posted the best mark among the competitors in the discus throw (131 feet, 9 inches) and third best in the pole vault (12-4) and javelin (158-10).
After four events, Bates College leads the meet with 42 points. M.I.T. is in second with 19 points followed by Worcester State University with 12. Johnson accounted for USM’s one point.
