CARIBOU — Officials with the Caribou Regional Technology Center recently announced that Idella Thompson has been selected as the Outstanding Career and Technology Education Student of the Year for 2013. Idella is the daughter of Penny and Dana Thompson of Caribou.
Idella and her guests attended an Honors Dinner at the Lewiston Regional Technology Center on April 27; the dinner recognized one outstanding student from each of the 27 technology centers in Maine.

The Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education (MACTE) awarded two $1,000 scholarships and Congressman Mike Michaud awarded a third. Idella was one of the three scholarship recipients.
While her scholastic enthusiasm and commitment to community was revered at the Honors Dinner, Criminal Justice Instructor Reed Nonken explained how Idella’s personality has impacted the Caribou Regional Technology Center.
“I believe that Idella exemplifies a top technology center student by living the example of what we promote here with the combination of education realized through real-world work experience,” Nonken said. “Idella has been a part of numerous programs within the Technology Center and has maintained the highest grade point average in her classes, all while working at a local business serving the community and participating in numerous additional activities promoting the technology center and excellence in education,” he added. “In addition to the accomplishments directly related to her classroom experiences, Idella has been able to demonstrate a unique quality with her ability to work well with and gain the respect of both faculty and students alike.”
Nonken also stated that Idella took marketing her junior year and criminal justice her senior year, and her average has been consistently 100 in both classes.
“She is a pleasant young lady who is always willing to help out,” Nonken said.
Thompson is a licensed funeral attendant and she is charter member of the teen advisory group at the Caribou Public Library; she was also selected for Dirigo Girls State and served as Secretary of State for 2012. In addition, Idella is the secretary of her high school class, served as homeroom representative and helps publish the school newspaper.
Thompson also plays violin, cello and accordion for the Fort Fairfield Fiddleheads and Friends fiddle group. As a member of Girl Scouts of America Troop 405, a diamond service unit, she earned a Bronze Star Award and was a delegate to state convention.
Thompson plans to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall to get an associates degree in criminal justice and then on to a 4-year degree in mortuary science at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
