Library asks kids to dig into reading
IN THE CITY
by Dianna Leighton
As the school year winds down, the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library is getting ready for a full line-up of summer programming for children, teens, and families. This year’s theme is ‘Dig Into Reading!, which encourages young readers to explore and imagine dinosaurs, gardens, caves, ancient pyramids, and more!
Starting on June 1, young readers can sign-up to receive a log to track their summer reading and collect a variety of prizes, including books, dinosaur models, and sunglasses. Teens can also join in on the fun by submitting reviews of their favorite books, bands, movies, and video games for a chance to win books from the library’s prize vault. Reading logs and review forms will be available online at presqueislelibrary.org and at library circulation desks.
For patrons looking for a hands-on digging experience, the library greenhouse and gardens will be open for the season and offers a space for anyone looking to grow their favorite vegetable or flower. Weekly youth gardening programs will also be offered every Thursday afternoon starting on June 27, covering topics such as insects, rain collecting, composting, and garden crafts. This summer’s garden is made possible through support from the Presque Isle Clover Kids 4-H Club and area homeschool associations.
In addition, the library will be offering a variety of free programs all summer long. This year’s lineup includes traditional favorites, including book clubs for “tweens” and teens and story time programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. For imaginative builders and curious computer scientists, the popular weekly LEGO Club will begin on June 18 and Coders Club will start on June 25. Finally, a special Dig Into Nature program on July 17 will explore the lives and habits of butterflies and moths, including those found in our own backyards!
The Mark and Emily Turner Memorial library is located at 39 Second Street in Presque Isle and provides access to a collection of nearly 60,000 items, including books, DVDs, magazines, audio resources, and downloadable eBooks and audio books. Patrons also have free access to 11 public access computers and Wi-Fi access throughout the building. The library’s Wii video gaming system and a selection of board games are also available for use during normal business hours.
