Maine connection to polar exploration — Maine has an especial interest in the expedition under MacMillan that is about to proceed to the Far North in a scientific quest for knowledge. As Admiral Peary is a Maine man, our state took a vital interest in his explorations and Mr. MacMillan obtained his education from Bowdoin and is accompanied by Dr. H. J. Hunt, a former resident of Bangor and more lately of Island Falls.
Perfect attendance — The following pupils of Grade IV, Longfellow School, have not been absent one half day or tardy during the spring term: Bessie Boone, Lloyd Collier, Mary Kidder, Horace Morehouse, Forest Tingley, Stella Briggs, Kathleen Hovey, Margaret Knox, Otto Myshrall and Philip Tingley.

Hume honored in Augusta — Signal honor will be paid to Colonel Frank M. Hume of Houlton, distinguished World War veteran on Monday, June 27 when an oil portrait of the former commander of the Maine troops in the famous 26th Yankee Division will be unveiled in the Hall of Flags in the rotunda of the State House in Augusta.
More museum donations — Among the new contributions to the Aroostook County Historical Museum of Houlton are the following: A fire bucket used by the Soldiers at the Houlton Barracks in 1845. Loaned by Hazen Nevers; a Bible over one hundred and thirty years old, loaned by Mrs. Hartley Howard of Linneus; a single ox-yoke (crooked yoke) made and used by Robert Blithem in 1855, presented by Ray L. Young of Patten; a linen pillow slip made from flax grown, spun and woven by Margaret Gregg in the year 1810 who was the great-great-grandmother of Claude H. Adams of Linneus.

TROPHY WINNERS — The bowling league sponsored by the Recreation Department for high school boys has presented trophies to the high individual bowlers for the past season, and to members of the winning team. Absent was team member Cecil King.
Over 400 swimmers enroll — Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Walter E. Burlock announced today that the American Red Cross instructional swim program will get underway Monday with the first bus leaving, rain or shine, for the Nickerson Lake swimming area. Over 400 children are registered for the program.

Classes of 1988 — Houlton High School graduated 120 students during Friday, June 10, commencement exercises. Barbara L. Nagle gave the valedictory address, after which the Senior Jazz Chorus sang “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Guests were present June 17 to watch 69 members of Hodgdon High School’s Class of 1988 receive their diplomas. Kimberly Anne Delong represented the class as salutatorian and Timothy Wayne Merritt as valedictorian. Author Sanford Phippen addressed 49 graduates of Southern Aroostook Community School at Island Falls on graduation day. Josiah Drew was recognized as valedictorian of the SACS Class of 1988.
