garner all-conference honors

    The Penobscot Valley Conference handed out its post-season awards recently, and several local athletes gained recognition.

    For baseball, Tyler Seeley and Saul Nunez, both of Presque Isle, were named to the first team. Joining them were Gage Feeney and Fred MacLean, both of Washington Academy; Evan Pelkey and Shawn Curran, both of John Bapst; Dean Walker of Caribou, Will Perkins of Hermon, Ben Walls of MDI, Ryan Rebar of Foxcroft Academy and Cameron Archer of Old Town.
    The second team included Hunter Law, Cameron Fadley, Jesse Provost and Kaleb Smith, all of Foxcroft Academy; Tom Burns and Nolan Webber, both of John Bapst; Tyler Varney of Washington Academy, Connor Maguire of Ellsworth, Matt Curry of Caribou and Jon Phelps of MDI.

    ADAM FLYNN was selected to the PVC Class B baseball all-academic team for the spring season.

    Presque Isle’s Adam Flynn and Kyle Goupille were all-academic selections.
    Rebar was named both player of the year and pitcher of the year and John Bapst’s Dave Gonyar was chosen as coach of the year.
    In the final statistics, Seeley led the PVC in hits with 26.
    Seeley led the PVC in batting average at .481. Seeley was tied for fifth in singles with 17.
    Seeley was part of a four-way tie for the league lead in doubles with eight. Jonah Stephenson of PI was tied for fifth with seven and Nunez part of a six-way tie for eighth with five.
    Stephenson was fifth in the steals category with 13.
    Nunez was tied for first in wins with five, was second in innings pitched with 40 and second in earned run average at 1.05 and third in strikeouts with 48.
    In Class B softball, the first team includes Caribou’s Jordyn Doucette and Amber Bonewicz, as well as Brittany Cousins, Kendra Hayward and Rachel Martin, all of Old Town; Karli Thebarge and Shannon Graves, both of Hermon; Cristin Wright of Ellsworth, Kassidy Seeley of Washington Academy and Hannah Shaw of Mount Desert Island.

    LIZA BUCK earned second-team all conference honors and statistically was among the top softball players in the PVC.

    Liza Buck, Shea Brown and Laurin Ackerson, all of Presque Isle, were selected to the second team.
    Others are Meaghan Leighton and Sami Milton, both of Old Town; Allessa Oakes and Claire Peterson, both of Hermon; Emily Berry of Ellsworth, Karrie O’Donnell of John Bapst and Haley Littlefield of MDI.
    All-academic team members from the region are PI’s Ackerson and Karlee Bernier.
    Cousins was named player of the year, Seeley and Hayward co-pitchers of the year and Old Town’s Jenn Plourde coach of the year. Old Town won the team championship and Hermon was the runner-up.
    In the final statistics for the conference, Liza Buck tied for fifth in doubles with eight.
    Buck and Megan Seward hit two home runs each, tying for second in the conference.
    For RBI, Buck was third with 25 and Carly Bell was seventh with 21.
    In runs scored, PI’s Jillian Flynn was fourth with 24.
    Ackerson was third in innings pitched with 92, eighth in ERA at 3.42, fourth in strikeouts with 75 and tied for fourth in wins with eight.
    Making the girls’ tennis first team in singles were Ashley Richards of Caribou, Ina Maloney of Ellsworth and Jessica Allen of Hermon. Making up the doubles first team were Sarah Shelton and Mackenzie Myers of MDI and Sarah Phelps and Ivy Wallace, also of MDI.

    KAYLA GIRARDIN made the all-PVC second team in tennis singles and was also an all-academic selection.

    Presque Isle’s Kayla Girardin and Sarah Gilson were second team singles players, joining Alexa Massey of Caribou, Madeline Cook of MDI and Jessica Toothaker of Ellsworth.
    PI’s Blair Bailey and Michelle Cawley formed the second team in doubles.
    PI’s Monica Bearden was selected as coach of the year.
    Ellsworth won the conference title and Caribou was the runner-up. Richards was named player of the year.
    The first team boys’ singles players were Wei Yen Huang of Washington Academy, Luke Horton of MDI and Matt Dunning of John Bapst.
    On the boys’ side, Caribou’s Brendan Cyr and Tyler Willey were on the first team in doubles, along with Caleb Cough and Sam Jacobson, both of MDI.
    For the second team, Liam Hughes of Presque Isle and Ethan Plourde of Caribou made it, along with Ben Smith of Old Town, Evan Toothaker of Ellsworth and Ryan Ding of John Bapst. Woofie Kaiser and Sam Walker of MDI were selected in doubles.
    Huang was named player of the year and Ben Rowell of MDI was the coach of the year.
    Girardin was the lone representative from Presque Isle on the all-academic team.
    In girls’ track and field, Presque Isle’s Amanda Bennett made the first team in the 1,600-meter race walk and teammate Regan Nelson made the first team for the discus.
    Presque Isle’s Gabe Player made the second team in the 300-meter low hurdles. Mitchell Ayotte of PI was a second-team high jump and long jump selection.
